I can get connected but I can't get web pages. Why?

Make sure that you have your DNS specified properly in your connection settings. Go into DUN, right click on your connection, left click on properties. Click on the server types tab at the top, click on the TCP/IP settings button on the lower right. Make sure that the DNS are set to your ISP's specifications.
Make sure that you have the proper winsock.dll and wsock32.dll files. The winsock should be in c:\windows. It should be 42kb for windows 95 and 21kb for windows 98. The wsock32 should be in c:\windows\system. It should be 65kb for windows 95 and 40kb for windows 98. Any others that you find are generally renamed. If you find a wsock32.ska file, consult a local technician because you have a virus known as Happy99. If you have a winsock that is in c:\windows\ws2bakup, consult a local technician to get it cleared up.
Another reason for this is that people may not even be connected but just have their web browsers open. Make sure that you get connected to your ISP before trying to access a page. An easy way to check is to look in the bottom right corner of your monitor, where the clock is. Check to see if there are two little monitors that are flashing on and off and look like they are connected. If they are not there, then you are not connected to the internet.

I get a "404 not found" error or a "403 forbidden" error when I try to access web pages. Why?

A '404 not found error' implies that the page was either renamed or moved to another server. There is not a whole lot that can be done about it.
A '403 forbidden error' means that you do not have authorization to access the page on the server. Mostly these pages are proprietary pages that only members or customers of the company can access. Try contacting the company who owns the site to find out more about the page.

Why does my e-mail get stuck while downloading messages?

Some internet providers have set limits on how much mail can be downloaded at once. If the total size of the email on your spool breaks the set limit, then when you try to download it, the download will get stuck when it reaches the limit. The way to fix this is to get the mail deleted. If you have access to a Web Browser, you can access your e-mail through it and then delete the appropriate message(s).

Why does my connection get terminated?

The most likely cause of being suddenly disconnected is that your phone line can't support the speed at which your modem is connecting to WFECA. The faster your modem communicates with us and the more data transferred, the more likely you will be to be disconnected. Generally, a 33.6Kbps modem is more reliable than a 56Kbps modem.

Why do I get disconnected after I check my e-mail?

There is a setting in Outlook Express that disconnects you once you check your e-mail. To change this setting, go to Tools and the select Options. Once you are under Options, Click on the Connection Tab and then uncheck the Hang up after sending and receiving. Follow the links to see screenshots of the procedure.

 I've got a 56Kbps modem. Why can't I connect at that speed?

The FCC limits legal speed on the telephone network to 53Kbps. Ultimately, connection speed is dictated by your phone line conditions.

What are typical connect speeds of V.90 modems?

Typical V.90 connections are in the mid 40 Kbps range. High quality copper lines and a close proximity between your modem and the Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) are critical for V.90 connections.

Why does my computer say I am connecting at 57600 or 115200 bps when I know this is impossible? What is the difference between DCE and DTE speed?

Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) is the speed between your computer and modem, while Data Communications Equipment (DCE) is the speed between your analog modem and one of WFECA's digital modems. When you see 57600 or 115200 bps, your computer is reporting DTE instead of the DCE speed.

Why is my connection speed so slow?

All WFECA modems meet the V90 standard. We have customers connecting from 9600bps to 48Kbps depending on the quality of their phone line and the distance away from the telephone company's Central Office(C0).
A few rules of thumb: If you live within 1 mile of the CO you can expect connect speeds around 40Kbps. If you live around 2 miles away, 33.6Kbps would be average. If you live 3 miles or more away, 28.8Kbps is as good as it gets.
The local phone companies use remote switches to serve rural customers. These remotes connect back to the CO at 28.8Kbps. This limits connect speeds for rural customers to 28.8Kbps at the very best. If they live more than 1 mile beyond one of the remotes they will connect in the low 20Kbps range. Two miles are more and and 15Kbps to 19Kbps is the best they can hope for.
WFECA uses the best equipment available today. ALL our telephone circuits are T1 based and therefore fully digital. This means there is nothing more WFECA can do to improve connect speeds on our end of the connection. The limit in speed is between the customer and the telephone company.
Ask the phone company to work with you to improve connect speed. Also, check internal house wiring. Damaged wiring, corroded connections, multiple telephones on the same line, and even lightning damaged lightning protectors can reduce connect speeds.
