CEO'S Corner - Why we Relay for Life

WFEC is premier co-sponsor, with Wewahitchka-based Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative, of the Relay for Life in Washington and Calhoun Counties, and is premier sponsor of the Holmes and Jackson County Relays. WFEC and Gulf Coast EC representatives recently presented a $58,000 check to the local American Cancer Society units. Shown, from left, are Terry Mullen, WFEC Manager of Communications and Member Services; Jenna Nagy, ACS Area Development Director; Gary Clark, WFEC Vice President of Member Services; Roy Barns, Gulf Coast EC General Manager and CEO; Bill Rimes, WFEC Executive Vice Pres. and CEO; Michael White, Gulf Coast EC Manager of Marketing and Member Services; Tina Lane, Gulf Coast EC Member Services Specialist; Lori Fitzpatrick, ACS Executive Director; and Shiela Jackson ACS Area Executive Disrector.

Cancer does not discriminate. It has touched nearly every family, including mine. The American Cancer Resource Center tells us that nearly 9 million Americans are living today with a diagnosis of cancer, and in this year alone, more than 550,000 are expected to die from this dreaded disease. That's more than 1,500 people per day.

Since 1990, well over 5 million people have lost their lives to cancer. Do you realize, that's more lives lost to cancer than we have lost in all the wars this country has fought since we became a republic? As a 30-year military veteran, I certainly pay attention to a figure like that.

There is no cure for cancer, but through research, there is hope. That's why the American Cancer Society needs the financial support of businesses like yours and ours.

This year, we at West Florida Electric Cooperative are proud, as a Touchstone Energy cooperative and Alabama Electric Cooperative member, to be a regional premier sponsor of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in the four counties we serve. WFEC's employees also have formed Relay teams to participate and raise money. The following are the dates and locations of these events and phone numbers to call for information:
